Pregnancy and Chiropractic

Chiropractic care during pregnancy is extremely beneficial both to the mother as well as the developing baby.  During pregnancy, there is a list of medications that are considered “safe” but even those are recommended to be limited.  Chiropractic is a safe, effective, and drug-free way of relieving many of the aches and pains that often arise during pregnancy.

Chiropractic care, however, has a much more far reaching benefit than simply pain relief.  Adjustments aid in balancing a woman’s pelvis which relieves possible tension on uterine ligaments allowing for the best environment for the baby to grow, develop, and prepare for delivery by moving into the most optimal position.  Also, chiropractic care removes interference in the mother’s nervous system which coordinates and controls all functions of the body, including the development of the baby.

Adjustments have also been shown to have a direct effect on the part of the brain that regulates hormones.  This is significant because it restores balance to the hormone system which allows the brain to properly regulate hormone production and release which is important during labor and delivery.

A study by Dr. Fallon showed that women who received chiropractic care throughout pregnancy had, on average, 24% shorter labor times for primigravida (first pregnancy) women and an average of 39% shorter labor times for multiparous (had at least one child prior) women. (The effects of chiropractic treatment on pregnancy and labor: a comprehensive study. Fallon J. Proceedings of the world chiropractic congress. 1991; 24-31.)

The Webster Technique is a very specific way to analyze and correct sacral subluxation or misalignment restoring proper biomechanical function of the sacrum/pelvis. By restoring proper functioning and positioning of the sacrum/pelvis, any unwanted tension or pressure on uterine ligaments is removed allowing for an optimal environment for the developing baby. For this reason, utilization of the Webster Technique often has an effect on the positioning of the baby within the uterus allowing room for the baby to move into the best position for delivery.
