THE 5 STAGES OF HEALING

At Life Wellness Center, our goal is to help you live a healthy and fulfilled life that is pain free. Even if you’re recovering from an injury, our goal is not to just get you back to where you were before it, but to be even stronger and healthier than you previously were. Our physical therapy services help to restore the function and mobility of your body without the use of harsh medication or drugs. We use a more natural way to help improve your functioning while simultaneously getting rid of any pain.  

In order to do this, we believe in five stages of healing. These stages are defined as recover, regain, return, continuing the work, and self care. Take a look at how these stages work and what makes them vital to the healing and recovery process. 

RECOVER

Our first stage is the recovery stage. This stage is the time when your body is typically dealing with higher levels of pain and inflammation. During this stage of physical therapy, you’ll likely be focusing on reducing the amount of pain and inflammation, whether this is from a post operative procedure, a sports injury, or you’re experiencing daily levels of high pain, we take the time to understand your pain and what may be causing it. During this phase you’ll also receive education about what is causing your pain and how you can best eliminate it at home or through other forms of care.

REGAIN

At this point in your treatment, your pain and inflammation should have greatly decreased and you should notice your body returning to its normal state of function and mobility. While your body is still healing, even if you are pain-free, you need to continue treatment. This stage of the process helps you regain your strength and previous levels of function by strengthening any weak muscles and restoring your range of motion.

RETURN

Now that you’ve gotten your body back to where you were before the pain or injury, now we focus on helping your body go beyond. Our physical therapists focus on teaching you strategies and exercises that will help strengthen you and avoid the potential for future injuries. During this time we also give you a home exercise program that you’ll be able to continue on your own to help continue your healing.

CONTINUING THE WORK

Similar to the return stage, continuing the work is all about helping your body recover, heal, and strengthen away from our office. While you can still schedule appointments and attend regular sessions, it's important that you continue to do your home exercises and pay attention to the way that your body feels. If you’re experiencing new or odd levels of pain or discomfort, talk to your doctor. We’re here to help you get the most out of your treatment.

SELF CARE

The final step includes your care outside of the office. Like we mentioned, you should be continuing your care and exercises at home, but you also should be caring for your body in other ways. Due to the amount of movement, you may be finding that your body is sore or slightly swollen. This is completely normal and you may need to care for your body with rest, hot baths, steam showers, and other types of care.
